All About Quilted Coats

Quilted clothing, especially coats, have been all the rage recently. And why shouldn’t they be?! They’re a great way to express yourself while being completely unique!
If you’re like me, you have many quilts that aren’t used, but you can’t bear to part with them. Quilted coats are an amazing way to give new life to a quilt that deserves to be shown off. It’s also a great way to upcycle quilts that have irreparable damage, since you can work around those tough spots.
One of the best things about making your own quilted coat is that you can pick the perfect pattern for your style. Peggy made the Tara pattern into a vibrant jacket and Carol used the Winny pattern for her fun and playful coat. Other great options are the Nellie, Amalie, and Lucy patterns.

Our favorite coat pattern to use is the Elemental Coat pattern by Teresa Coates from Crinkle Dreams. She got her start as a quilter and specifically wrote the pattern with quilters in mind. She even wrote two companion patterns - Wild Friends and Lonestar - that help you make smaller quilted pieces, so that you don’t need to cut up a whole quilt!

Another great way to get the look of a pieced quilt to use for your jacket, with minimal effort, is to use a wholecloth quilt! Carol made her quilted coat out of Old Glory Patchwork fabric and it looks stunning!
There are so many options to make a quilted coat that fits your personality just right! Taking something as beautiful and unique as a quilt and turning it into a piece of wearable art feels like a beautiful next step in a quilt's life. The fact that there will be nothing else like the one you create instills a sense of magic and significance that isn't quite found anywhere else.
