My Story
From Iceland to quilters around the world
I'm so glad you found us! At GE Designs, we've always been more than a quilt shop. We're a community built on creativity, connection, and a passion for making quilting easier and more joyful.
I discovered quilting at 23 while living in my native Iceland, and what started as a creative outlet quickly turned into a lifelong journey. Before long, I launched Iceland's first online quilt shop and began designing patterns that mixed traditional ideas with a fresh, modern twist. Always keeping things simple, fun, and approachable.
In 2003, quilting led me, and my family, all the way to Minnesota, where GE Designs truly began to flourish. From my cozy studio just west of the Twin Cities, I've spent the years designing patterns, publishing books, and creating tools that make quilting faster, easier, and a lot more fun.
When I designed the first Stripology ruler, I knew there had to be a better way to cut fabric and save time. That innovation sparked a whole line of tools, including our GEasy tools, all designed to help quilters like you skip the frustration and get straight to the joy of creating.
Today, GE Designs has grown into a vibrant, global quilting family, and I couldn't be more proud. No matter how much we grow, one thing will never change: we're here to inspire creativity, simplify the process, and make sure every quilter feels right at home.

Community comes first
When the world shut down in 2020, Gudrun started free quilt-alongs and continued with her weekly live shows. Not to sell anything, but to give quilters, many of them on their own, a reason to show up and connect. Thousands joined. The community is still here, and it is still our mission to grow and nurture it.

Every year we donate our sample quilts, the ones we make for photos and product development, to people experiencing homelessness in Minneapolis. Instead of storing them, we put them where they keep someone warm. We have also designed patterns made for giving, like Jumbo-Laya, created to donate to NICUs, with a directory to help you find hospitals that welcome handmade quilts.

We came to Minnesota from Iceland, and Chaska became home. Today we employ 18 people right here, many of them finding steady, good work close to home. As immigrants who built something in a small town, we care about being a good place to work, not just a bigger one.

Where Stripology Began
It started in Houston
The story of Stripology starts in Houston. That is where everything changed.
At a busy trade show more than ten years ago, Gudrun unveiled the first Stripology ruler. What began as a simple demo turned into a breakthrough, not just for her, but for quilters everywhere.
She built it to make fabric cutting faster, easier, and more accurate. That one idea sparked a whole new approach to quilting. From that day on, Stripology was more than a ruler. It was a movement.
More than a ruler
Quilters have always loved precision, but hated the hassle.
Stripology fixed that. With built-in slots, smart markings, and an ergonomic design, it removed the most frustrating parts of cutting: measuring over and over, miscuts, wasted fabric, and time lost to second-guessing. It gave quilters what they had wanted for years, effortless accuracy.
Then Gudrun started designing patterns from the ruler out. Her geometric approach simplified even the most complex blocks. What used to be tedious became fast and fun. Stripology was never just a ruler. It became the foundation of a whole new way to quilt.
